Start Studio Sportjuli 2011In the coming year, Shift investigates how to improve the spatial position of sport in the city. The secondary role of sport in urban planning has deemed sport facilities to the edges and rest spaces of the city. This spatial isolation is contrary to the central role that sport plays in contemporary society. With the conviction that sport can be used as a catalyst for urban quality, Studio Sport will develop strategies to integrate sport in the compact city. The research is supported by the Netherlands Architecture Fund, and will take place in collaboration with the cities Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Link |

Rethink LAaugust 2011Shift participates in the 'Rethink LA Exhibition' with their proposal for the conversion of the Judge Harry Pregerson interchange in downtown LA. Outtake from the exhibition text: At the dawn of the new century, technological developments inspired by a renewed environmental awareness promise a total revolution in infrastructure and car intelligence. In June 2011 the state of Nevada authorized the use of autonomous vehicles, creating the first step towards more safe and fluent traffic flows; while the use of electricity as an alternative power source will result in clean and silent cars. Not only will our cars and roads become sustainable, they will allow for entire adjacent city portions to witness a reborn by expanding and reconnecting across the infrastructure system. As trade routes and strategic cross-roads have been the starting point for historical cities, the freeway systems will be the new backbone of social, economical and cultural developments of contemporary cities. Los Angeles' freeway system will finally truly become, as Reyner Banham once stated, one of the "greater works of Man, a coherent state of mind, a complete way of life". Link |

Shift wins Charlotte Köhler Prize 2012may 2012Quote from the press release: "Shift designs for different scale levels. Besides outspoken, expressive and formally strong buildings, they design engaged urban projects. The designs [...] look fresh, uncomplicated and positive. The strong architectural shapes are recurrent in their urban ensembles, where they are successfully embedded in the instable urban surrounding. The role of architecture within the urban context is that of a constant value or even of a value creator, capable of activating the city. The office seeks collaborations with different parties in the development of their projects. The project Sportplein Binnenrotte in Rotterdam is a strong example of this working method." The Charlotte Köhler Price is an incentive prize for Dutch artists, architects and theater designers under the age of 35. The prize of €20.000 is given to young talent of whom, based on realized works, much is to be expected in the future. Links |
