Sport 2.0

June 2011

Thijs van Bijsterveldt participates at Sport 2.0, an initiative of the municipality Almere that explores promising and innovative concepts for sports. In the coming years Almere will grow from 190.000 to 350.000 inhabitants. This so called 'leap of scale' introduces the possibility to operate as a testground for the rest of the Netherlands. During the event several concepts are generated that combine spatial, programmatic and social issues around sport within the context of Almere.

Start Studio Sport

Juli 2011

In the coming year, Shift investigates how to improve the spatial position of sport in the city. The secondary role of sport in urban planning has deemed sport facilities to the edges and rest spaces of the city. This spatial isolation is contrary to the central role that sport plays in contemporary society. With the conviction that sport can be used as a catalyst for urban quality, Studio Sport will develop strategies to integrate sport in the compact city. The research is supported by the Netherlands Architecture Fund, and will take place in collaboration with the cities Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

Rethink LA

August 2011

Shift participates in the 'Rethink LA Exhibition' with their proposal for the conversion of the Judge Harry Pregerson interchange in downtown LA.

Outtake from the exhibition text:

At the dawn of the new century, technological developments inspired by a renewed environmental awareness promise a total revolution in infrastructure and car intelligence. In June 2011 the state of Nevada authorized the use of autonomous vehicles, creating the first step towards more safe and fluent traffic flows; while the use of electricity as an alternative power source will result in clean and silent cars. Not only will our cars and roads become sustainable, they will allow for entire adjacent city portions to witness a reborn by expanding and reconnecting across the infrastructure system. As trade routes and strategic cross-roads have been the starting point for historical cities, the freeway systems will be the new backbone of social, economical and cultural developments of contemporary cities. Los Angeles' freeway system will finally truly become, as Reyner Banham once stated, one of the "greater works of Man, a coherent state of mind, a complete way of life".

The collaboration between Brazilian and Dutch architects/artists resulted in a proposal for the intensification of the public space of the Ibirapuera park. The limits of the continuous space of the modernist park are tested by extending the park on top of the monumental buildings of Niemeyer. Through a series of collages and one on site intervention the hidden potential of the roof of the OCA building as a public hill for the park is explored.

Shift wins Red Dot 2012 with Faculty Club

April 2012

The Faculty Club wins prestigious red dot 2012 in the category architecture and urban design. The project was selected from 4.515 entries and was judged by an international jury of thirty design experts, including Ben van Berkel. The jury praises the Faculty Club as a building that combines past and present, and fuses opposites: glass and stone, transparency and solidity.

On July 2nd, 2012, the presentation of the internationally renowned quality seal will take place in the course of the red dot gala. More than 1,000 international guests from the design world, industry, society and the media will gather that evening in the Aalto-Theater, the opera house in Essen, in order to celebrate the highlight of this year's competition. Afterwards, Faculty Club will be on display at a four-week special exhibition in the red dot design museum.

The red dot design award, whose origins reach back to the 1950s, is carried out in three disciplines: the "red dot award: product design", the "red dot award: communication design" and the "red dot award: design concept". The award - the red dot - has established itself internationally as one of the most appreciated quality seals for outstanding designs.

Shift wins Charlotte Köhler Prize 2012

May 2012

Quote from the press release:

"Shift designs for different scale levels. Besides outspoken, expressive and formally strong buildings, they design engaged urban projects. The designs [...] look fresh, uncomplicated and positive. The strong architectural shapes are recurrent in their urban ensembles, where they are successfully embedded in the instable urban surrounding. The role of architecture within the urban context is that of a constant value or even of a value creator, capable of activating the city. The office seeks collaborations with different parties in the development of their projects. The project Sportplein Binnenrotte in Rotterdam is a strong example of this working method."

The Charlotte Köhler Price is an incentive prize for Dutch artists, architects and theater designers under the age of 35. The prize of €20.000 is given to young talent of whom, based on realized works, much is to be expected in the future.
